Maine Art Hill opens its first show of the 2024 season on May 11 with local artist Bethany Harper Williams. All her new works are on display for the duration of the month of May at the gallery at 14 Western Avenue in Kennebunk.  Later in the month, on May 25, Williams is joining two other local artists in an Artists’ Reception to celebrate the beginning of summer.

Williams splits her time between her new home in New York City and her beloved beach house in Biddeford Pool, just up the coast from Kennebunkport. With this varied scenery surrounding her, we look forward to Williams using multiple themes for this new show, from abstracts to traditional beach scenes to cityscapes. Be aware, though, that more than sunshine and city lights have caught her eye over the last year.

“Many of my cityscapes are inspired by the city lights on my walks home from my studio,” shares Williams. “The city is in drastic contrast to my beach works, but I take the same idea of capturing a moment, abstracting the landscape, which is now buildings instead of beaches. Then, I focus on the figure’s mood without the details of representation. It is fun to find textures and patterns on the city streets.”

Williams usually has an abstract on the go as she works on more extensive works. These allow her to explore color combos, shapes, and patterns. We have grown to love her beach scenes, boats, and the busy streets of the big city. Yet, we look forward to her latest interest in the pups she sees in both locations.

“Influenced by all the lights and sights and so many dogs in the city, a few pups found their way into my work,” explains Williams. “After this, I just couldn’t neglect my beach dogs. So, both will be featured in this new show.”

Even though some of her themes are new, the layers of unexpected shapes, patterns, and colors that create classic Bethany Harper Williams works are still present.  She still takes the viewer away from the reality of the image to trigger a personal memory, a moment in time.
