Part of Bethany Harper Williams’ Solo Spring Show features one of our favorite pets, pups. These canine creatures can capture a heart, whether in the city or on the beach. This series started when Williams tried to find a special gift for a friend’s ‘big birthday’ and decided to do a portrait of his German Shepherd.
“I had so much fun painting him,” says Williams. The owner was so excited about the painting that I kept going with other dogs—beach dogs, city dogs, and wet dogs!”
This subject is certainly not the only one in this spring show, but they are prevalent and bring a new life to Williams’s work.
“I love the energy and personality that each painting portrays,” shares Williams. “Again, I’m trying to keep them loose—more interested in the mood than the details.”
As visitors, we often see patterns in Williams’s work—polka dots, squiggles, unexpected colors—which draw us in as viewers. These details that make her work recognizable are still coming through in the new works.
