Bethany Harper Williams has always played with the abstract in her paintings through the use of patterns and patches of colors.
“The small abstracts are works in progress as I work on other large paintings,” Williams explains. “I start with leftover paint and create random shapes. I experiment with color synergy and work on these in many layers, gradually adding and changing the balance of shapes and colors until something sings. As it starts to take shape, I add detail and patterns inspired by the mood of the painting – lines, circles, polka dots, and writing.”
Williams recently rewrote her Artist Statement, which speaks well of her approach. She finds the balance between what’s real and what’s imagined. She is taking the focus away from what’s expected and allowing for interpretation and emotion.
Bethany Harper Williams’ work explores the abstract in the real world around us, straddling the line between what’s real and what’s imagined. Having moved to NYC in 2021, this dynamic city’s multitude of geometric patterns, symbols, and moving lights provide endless inspiration. As we are all constantly moving, the world is never really viewed as a static image; lines are blurred, and light and reflection transform hardscapes. Deconstructing a perceived image into layers of intersecting shapes and patterns and combining it with common symbols and recognizable details creates a balance of real and imagined, taking the focus away from the expected and allowing for interpretation and emotion.
