“You can take me away from the beach, but you can’t take the beach away from me,” shares artist Bethany Harper Williams. “The ocean and its surroundings have always inspired me. I’m trying to capture a memory that may be common to many but personal to you.”
Williams’s beach scenes have captured a great deal of attention. Whether they are scenes off her deck in Biddeford Pool or the many other Maine beaches she visits, she captures the joy in pastel colors and interesting brushwork.
“The expanse of nature allows abstracting the elements through expressive brushstrokes, subtle textures, and simple forms,” explains Williams. “Layers of unexpected shapes, patterns, and colors create a visual composite of energy and calm.”
She has pushed this even further with some of the beach paintings, combining large blocks of color with some blocks or windows to reveal a painting.
She shares, “I like to call this series ‘Pieces of Me.’ It is literally different pieces of paintings collaged to form a balance of abstract and reality.”
