Daniel Corey is back in Kennebunk, and we love how he represents Maine and the simple beauty that surrounds this area. This time, he recreates the beauty of the many harbors scattered up and down the Maine coast. Each has its unique beauty.

Below, you will find a sampling of notes and ideas from Corey about a few pieces in his solo summer show at Maine Art Hill, 5 Chase Hill Rd, Kennebunk, Maine.

“Monhegan Light" shares that thing that happens to light on peninsulas and islands. The light reflects off the water, illuminating the moisture in the air from both sides. Blues seem more intense when this happens, and shadows fill with color.”

“Harbor Morning and Harbor Afternoon" are companion pieces with the same general scene. One is of the soft morning, and the other is an afternoon piece with more turbulent clouds, slightly choppy water disturbed by the sun’s placement in the sky, and a few boats going over the harbor speed limit.”

“Back on the Docks" — Take a second when viewing this painting. Look around at different areas of the painting, and let your eye wander. Notice a shift in vertical as if you were standing on a floating dock, and a subtle wake moved under your feet.”

“Dreaming of Fishing" is for the Fishermen and women or those who dream of fishing. The cloud in the distance echoes the silhouette of the lobster boat, which represents the dream. I had fun pushing color and enhancing the story with the cloud.”
