If you know Craig Mooney, you know his stunning skies and expansive views. However, his new show has a couple of figuatives that are well worth visiting.
“For this show, I embarked on a journey of creating more figurative works,” says artist Craig Mooney. “Each stroke and detail is meticulously crafted and continues on the theme of women by the sea.”
The newest part of his process involves removing paint rather than adding it. The overall result is a calm, almost ethereal feeling as one takes in the work.
All his figuratives are ambiguous, but not all are as soft. As seen below, the details in White Hat are crisper, especially when viewed from a distance. However, the blending and softness of the landscape surrounding this mysterious lady become more apparent when you get closer, leaving the details of the subject crisp and clean.
“The choice of brushwork is always conscious,” Mooney shares. "The brushwork in some of my works for this show is loose, yet many with a high level of detail remain mysterious.”
“In the piece "Veranda", I purposefully built up the painting and removed large swaths,” Mooney explains. “This creates and reveals this exciting texture and a bit of an ‘archeological foundation’ of what came before. It’s exciting.”
