On Saturday, August 3, Maine Art Hill in Kennebunk, Maine, will feature local female artist Margaret Gerding. The Gallery at the Grand at 1 Chase Hill Rd will host a showcase of Gerding's new work. The show will open at 10 a.m., and there will be an Artist’s Reception from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, August 3. All are welcome to attend.

"We are fortunate to have Margaret Gerding in our community," says gallery owner John Spain. "When she moved to town a few years ago, we both knew Maine Art Hill could be her ideal home. It has been a perfect fit. Her brushes beautifully capture our area. She sees this landscape through her own eyes, and her work is spectacular.”

Visual artists communicate with the rest of the world in different ways. Each has a lens that changes what is “seen” to what is “perceived.” These perceptions become their art.

"It's all about capturing the moments on canvas to depict a portrait of the region," shares Gerding. "My vision captures these tranquil moments in a way that portrays their mood, the scene, and its intricate palette.”

Living in Kennebunkport is a great source of inspiration for Gerding's work. She can frequently be found with an easel, oil paints, and a paintbrush in hand, whether in the middle of the marsh or along a secluded pathway. She emphasizes that when it comes to being inspired, she couldn't be the painter she is without painting directly outdoors.

"Being in the marsh is when I feel most in tune with nature and who I am," explains Gerding. “I need to work directly observing nature—the struggles and successes. Dividing my time between plein-air and studio painting has allowed me to balance study and refinement.”

Gerding's completed artwork appears very smooth, but that's different from how it begins. She usually starts by sketching her ideas with a large house brush. Bold strokes initially define the painting, giving it an abstract appearance. For her, the artwork needs to be effective in its simplest form. If she can't get the composition, color, and tone to work together as one, she starts over.

“The more I paint, the more knowledge is etched into my movements. Every painting is a stepping stone to the next work. Every mistake teaches," she says. "I experiment to stay fresh. I have even worked in encaustic and pastels to give myself a change."

Gerding's show will start on August 3 and run until August 26. The galleries are open daily at 10 a.m., and everyone is welcome. If you're in town on Saturday's opening, please stop by from 5-7 p.m. for the Artist's Reception and meet Gerding to learn more about her work.
