Artist Ryan Kohler may not be a sailor, but his love of boats and their symbolism is woven through his life as a painter.
"The sailboat paintings have always been symbolic for me," shares Kohler. "Sailing as a metaphor for life is an interesting one. You’re in this vast, dangerous nothingness with zero control over the weather and conditions. And you’re forced to use a limited number of tools and skills to guide yourself and steer yourself, hopefully, in a meaningful direction with a positive outcome."

" Boating is the ultimate situation where you must accept your reality and use what you have to the best of your abilities," says Kohler. "Life is a lot like that."
As for the lobster boats...
" I love the architecture of the lobster boat," he shares. "These paintings have become caricatures of sorts. There’s a character design aspect. They have a little more personality than in works I've done in the past. To me, that’s a fun angle to approach them with."
