"Lately, I've emphasized learning to paint ideas and images in my head instead of relying heavily on reference photos. My previous work has definitely had its share of revisions. Turns out, I was never too interested in reality. However, this new, exciting approach gives me the feeling of unlimited power!" laughs Kohler.

"It's like the equivalent of a musician discovering they can play by ear instead of using sheet music. It changes how I think about making images, and I believe it will lead to some essential things in the evolution of my style," says Kohler.
Kohler admits to it being refreshing to not to look at reference images as he paints,
"I just invent as I go, pulling things from my memory of every painting I've ever done," he says. I can bend, stretch, and skew things, make up colors, and do things that generally don't make sense as long as they all serve the painting appropriately in the end. It's fun, and I feel free."

"I would like to know if this change in my process has anything to do with my wife and I expecting our first child this November," wonders Kohler. "I look forward to having that young energy in the house and seeing what art projects we get into together in the coming years.
He takes a more childlike approach when drawing/painting something he sees in his head.
"I’m hoping the skills I’ve developed over the years help me translate these visions to the canvas in an interesting way for others, too."
