Margaret Gerding is a long-time artist at Maine Art Hill. When she moved to Kennebunk several years ago, we were thrilled to be her home gallery. As the years have passed, Gerding has continued to hone her skills with hours spent in the marshes and beaches of this incredible state painting plein air. Nestled in these landscapes, she can be found working on her own portfolio, as well as teaching. But what does she do in winter?
“Winter is a time of refinement for me,” shares Gerding. “Long hours in the studio allowed me to develop large paintings from all the plein air work done in warmer weather.”
When Gerding has time to linger with a piece, study it, change it, and live longer, magic happens. “The large body of work done during this season gives time for the paintings to influence each other,” she explains. “I also do a bi-weekly day of figure drawing day. It keeps my observation skills honed.”
So, does her love of painting outdoors hibernate when the Maine snow flies.? Of course not.
“During this season, I still try to get out and paint plein air. However, I do have my Carhartts on,” Gerding laughs. “The views open up with the lack of foliage, and the winter skies are spectacular.”
