Shows on Maine Art Hill welcomes all to visit and view their first show of 2025. Abstraction, a three-artist show featuring new works from Angelique Luro, Carson Jackson, and Anita Loomis, opens on Saturday, May 10, at 10 AM with an Artists’ Reception from 5 - 7 PM
There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward, you can remove all traces of reality. ~ Pablo Picasso
By definition, abstract art is art that does not attempt to represent external reality but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures. Each of the three artists featured in this spring's show encompasses the definition perfectly, but with interesting differences.
Angelique Luro, a local artist in Kennebunkport, works with acrylic, mixed media, and collage. Her use of color is vibrant, saturated, and eye-catching. Her works invite you back again and again to find mysterious details that may have been missed before.
“Each piece of art I create teaches me something; I like to think of it as an exploration,” shares Luro. “The inspiration for my work is simple: nature and all she encompasses. My curiosities are vast; I approach painting playfully with a good sense of humor.”
Luro’s titles lead you down pathways full of memories and wonderings she has created, but somehow, with time spent, they become all your own.
Carson Jackson also calls Maine home. However, his creative process lies in his pursuit of the unique and the obscure. He engages with the world around him in ways that liven the moment, constantly seeking the unseen and translating those experiences onto his canvas.
“I’m a self-taught contemporary abstract artist known for combining mixed media and found objects to create unique works that challenge conventional interpretation,” Carson explains. “My work is a treasure hunt of experiences, moments, and images, each lovingly transmuted into my art.”
With a unique style guided by his curiosity and an inclination towards the unusual, Carson’s artworks resonate with the interplay of darkness and light, illustrating life's trials in a poetry of visual narrative.
Anita Loomis hails from Kittery, Maine. With paint, humor, and a deep curiosity about human imperfection, Loomis investigates how people with different cultural lenses navigate communication and relate to the natural world. Her experiences inform her creative process.
“I employ expressive black lines, lush colors, and transparency to conjure spaces, characters, and compositions in a distinctive style that evolved after working for many years in the field of architectural stained glass,” says Loomis. “I build upon several ongoing painting series, each addressing common threads that connect our human experiences. I lace my colorful, lighthearted imagery with purposeful intent meant to appeal to international audiences of any generation.”
Stylized scenes offer her characters an otherworldly environment to inhabit. Humor and a somewhat cartoonish style are purposeful devices she uses to make prickly subjects more approachable, and viewers more receptive to the thought-provoking aspects of her artwork. Rather than presenting a single, personal viewpoint, she prefers to offer broad perspectives that invite contemplation.
