Ellen Welch Granter has filled the walls at 5 Chase Hill Road in Kennebunk with birds, boats, and beauty. Maine Art Hill is thrilled with her show, Land and Sea.
“What I love most about showing my work is that it is the first, and probably only, chance I ever get to see it all simultaneously,” laughs Granter.

Abby Daggett, Marketing and Events Director, and Natalie Lane, Gallery Director, are the magic Granter is talking about. Together, they work with each artist to help envision each show. Once the artist has dropped off the work, it is their job to culminate and coordinate the world they have created.
“In my studio, it is stored in stacks along the floor as the work is created and finished,” explains Granter. “When Abby and Natalie finally hang on the gallery walls, sometimes I am delighted, and sometimes I see things I could have done better. But it always makes me contemplate what these paintings are all about.”

After years of being an accomplished artist, Granter still questions herself in interesting ways. Why did she return to the imagery? Why did she choose those particular colors?
“I can recall the music I listened to while I painted a certain thing, or the day I took the reference photo,” she says wistfully. “Lots to think about, but then, they are gone. I hope they have flown to new homes, where I can only wonder what thoughts the paintings will inspire in the viewer. That's the magical part of painting.”
