Most artist statements begin with "ever since I was a child, I knew I wanted to be an artist." Well, you'd think that after I won the East Rochester Volunteer Ambulance Corps Ham Festival Dinner Poster Contest in 7th grade, I would have clearly seen my future career path, but I didn't. Although I was always making stuff, painting, designing clothes, knitting, making jewelry, etc., my career took some long detours before I became a full-time artist, including seven years of studying Chinese and a 30-year career as a graphic designer. However, at each fork in the road, I turned more fully toward painting — toward what I love.

I try to convey this sense of place, The American Place, whether it's a farm pasture field with a working barn, a lobster shack along a wharf, or a once fish shack that now serves as a summer residence. I try to convey that moment of joy and presence through the scenes of my paintings, without intention for nostalgia or sentimentality. Realizing; though, that those elements are inherent in these seemingly ordinary subjects, giving our imaginations a bit of free reign to wonder who has lived and worked there, how their lives were along the way, and how different or the same they are as yours and mine.

“It is the poetry of light and constant change that makes me excited about my next painting. It can be a sunrise or sunset, ceaselessly moving water, an ever-changing harbor, a storm, or a gentle morning fog…It is the fleeting moments presented by nature that captivate me the most.”

It is the juxtaposition of light that inspires Karen’s realistic works. Each painting is an individual mental puzzle to be worked through. Combining realistic detail with the imagery created by color and light gives each painting a life of its own. Her miniatures offer a microscopic view of the wider vision surrounding us. Painting in Maine presents an ongoing drama of incredible landscapes and seascapes in just about any weather imaginable. Karen is influenced by her surrounding gardens, long open views, and any small detail lying in wait to spark her interest and call her artistry to task.

Keeping an open mind has allowed my art to evolve. I have moved away from a strictly representational style to one that pushes color and abstracts identifiable elements, leaving room for the imagination by adding and subtracting elements as I feel necessary. This process can take months! My current medium is acrylic, used as a base but can include other color pigments. Each painting is an individual piece and can contain other mixed media elements.
