By taking the landscape and simplifying it, my aim is to capture a memory without the details of representation. The expanse of nature, be it the sky, beach, or water, provides an opportunity to abstract the elements through expressive brushstrokes, subtle textures, and simple forms. Layers of unexpected shapes, patterns, and colors create a visual composite of energy and calm, taking the viewer away from the reality of the image and triggering a personal memory as a moment in time. A low horizon line or the playful placement of simple figures bring context to the expressive composition of color and texture.

My subjects have included marine, landscape, and intimate domestic still lifes. They share my interests in the effects of light at a particular moment. The threads of the canvas, the sea, Vermont, Maine, my family and friends have woven themselves inextricably into my psyche and my work.

"Seven years ago, while residing in the Pacific Northwest, I became inspired by the giant Pacific octopus. My work explores the dynamic balance between their playfulness and elegance, translating the creatures' fluid movements into molten glass. Through deliberate choices of color and form, I aim to achieve a harmonious interplay between intuition and control."

I work in layers, adding paint, scraping off, often mixing the colors directly on the canvas. Being extremely tactile, I often paint with my bare hands. I find I simplify more and more. There is so much clutter and noise surrounding us. By paring down to the bare essentials I can breathe. The spaces in between where nothing happens are almost more important. It puts the rest into perspective. I am working towards my paintings being a mental pause. If I suggest half the story, the rest is up to them. I spend a lot of time meditating. Therefore, approaching the same subject over and over, becomes like a meditative proses. Every time I try to get a little bit closer to the essence, or the soul of the subject.

Craig Mooney makes paintings of dramatic moments and heightened emotionality that are known for being expansive and expressive. Though a representational painter, the artist incorporates a myriad of abstract qualities throughout his paintings. In his figurative work, Mooney romanticizes his subjects and presents them in an atmospheric lens that is best described as "dreamlike". His paintings appear to be capturing a moment suspended in time. While his work feels familiar, it is not specific. All paintings are the product of his imagination.
