First Tracks, Sunrise Walk 12x16

Some artists paint places. Others paint experiences. William B. Hoyt does a bit of both.

For decades, Hoyt has chronicled the coast of Maine with a keen eye for atmosphere, light, and the small moments that often become our strongest memories. His paintings are not simply landscapes or marine scenes; they are invitations to step into a particular moment and linger there.

The collection featured in Maine Art Hill's Summer Spotlight Series feels almost like a day spent along the Maine coast, unfolding from dawn to dusk.

The day begins before most people are awake. In First Tracks, Sunrise Walk, Hoyt heads out early with Ajax, hoping to catch the sunrise before returning with cappuccinos for the hotel room. There is a quiet anticipation in these early moments, when the world belongs to dog walkers, fishermen, and early risers.

That same sense of morning calm appears in View from the Pantry, where a window overlooks Gilkey Harbor on Islesboro. Windjammers rest at anchor, perhaps spending their final night before returning home, or perhaps just beginning a journey farther Downeast. The harbor is still, the light is beautiful, and, as Hoyt admits, it's time for a cup of coffee.

Entourage 12x16 $3,200

Before Nine 16x24 $5,000

After the Ball 16x24 $5,000

As the day unfolds, Maine's waters come alive. In Racing to Windward, sleek Dark Harbor 20s—designed by Olin Stephens in 1934—lean into the breeze as they race toward the windward mark between Islesboro and the Minot Islands. Nearby, working boats continue a different tradition. Craig and Avery follows a lobster boat passing a lighthouse shoal at the eastern entrance to the Fox Island Thoroughfare between Vinalhaven and North Haven. In Entourage: Lobstering with Seagulls, the narrow waters between Hogg Island and the mainland are crowded with lobster gear, feeding grounds, and ever-present gulls that eagerly trail the hauling boats in search of an easy meal.

Hoyt's affection for the rhythms of coastal life extends ashore as well. Anyone familiar with southern Maine will recognize the scene in Before Nine, those treasured early hours when dogs are still allowed on the beach, and owners gather before the summer crowds arrive.

The energy continues in After the Ball, where Ajax takes center stage among a cast of beach-going dogs. Some charge into the surf after tennis balls, while others focus on socializing. Ajax, Hoyt notes, seems convinced he is the mayor and makes it his mission to greet everyone.

Racing to Windward 32 x 60 Oil on Linen $38,000

Craig and Avery 24x36 $14,500

Throughout the collection, Hoyt finds extraordinary beauty in ordinary moments. In Morning Run: Returning to Port, wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada lends a soft pink glow to the morning sun as one lobster boat races home while another heads out to pull traps. In Thin Blue Line, a small outboard traces a vivid blue wake across a harbor illuminated by the setting sun. The schooner Lewis French rests nearby, recalling a sailing trip Hoyt shared with a close friend, Spennie. One imagines the scene unfolding unexpectedly as they enjoy a cocktail in the cockpit, transforming an ordinary evening into a lasting memory.

The day concludes quietly in End of the Hall. Returning to a room at the Colony Hotel after an afternoon by the pool, Hoyt notices warm honey-colored light projected across a wall and chair. It is the kind of fleeting moment many people would walk past without noticing. For Hoyt, it becomes a painting.

That ability to pause and truly see is what makes William B. Hoyt's work so compelling. His paintings remind us that Maine's beauty is not found only in its famous landmarks or dramatic vistas. It lives in sunrise walks, harbor reflections, racing sailboats, working waterfronts, loyal dogs, and the golden light waiting at the end of the day.

These paintings are not simply views of Maine. They are invitations to experience it.
