Sumac Grove 30x30 $3500

There are some subjects that artists return to again and again. For Ellen Welch Granter, those subjects are found along the coast of Maine: sailboats floating quietly at anchor, shorebirds moving through the sky with purpose and grace, and expansive landscapes shaped by light, weather, and memory.

In her latest collection of ten large oil paintings, Granter revisits these familiar themes while bringing a fresh perspective to the canvas. Inspired by her daily life, walking the beach, observing birds, and simply paying attention to the beauty that surrounds her. Her paintings are rooted in firsthand experience and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

"My work is an effort to create paintings that evoke the same emotions of serenity and wonder in the viewer," Granter says.

Fireworks 24x24 $2640

Acadian Peace 36x48 $4800

Apparition 30x30 $3500

While the subjects themselves may be familiar to those who have followed her work over the years, this collection reflects a period of experimentation in the studio. Granter explored new colors and a more expressive application of paint, using thicker brushwork to create greater vibrancy, atmosphere, and movement throughout each piece.

The result is a body of work that feels both timeless and immediate. Sailboats drift in still harbors. Shorebirds travel across open skies. Warm evening light settles across the landscape. Each painting captures not only a place, but a feeling, a fleeting moment preserved before it disappears.

That sense of impermanence is at the heart of the collection. Summer in Maine is beautiful precisely because it never lasts long enough. The warm evenings, the brilliant colors, the calm waters, and the endless skies seem to arrive and depart in the blink of an eye.

"Summer in Maine always flies by too fast," Granter reflects. "The birds will migrate south, the colder fog will roll in, but the colors of a lovely balmy summer evening in Maine can be forever remembered."

Long Distance Romance 36x48 $4800

Rough Meadows 30x40 $3900

Through these paintings, Granter invites viewers to pause and hold onto those moments just a little longer. They serve as reminders to notice the quiet beauty around us—the sailboat at rest, the bird in flight, the glow of evening light on the horizon and to appreciate the wonder found in everyday life.

As another precious Maine summer unfolds, Granter remains what she has always been: an attentive observer, keeping her eyes open for inspiration and transforming those moments into paintings that allow the season to linger long after it has passed.
