Some landscapes tell you exactly where you are.
Craig Mooney's paintings invite a different question altogether: Where does this place remind you of?
For this newest body of work, the Vermont artist steps away from painting identifiable locations. Instead, he explores landscapes shaped by memory, experience, and imagination. The result is a collection of oil paintings that feel both familiar and elusive. These are places that seem as though you've stood there before, even if they exist only in memory.
"The work is not of a specific place or origin," Mooney explains. "Most of it is based on memory and experience."

That shift opens the door to something deeper than representation. Each painting becomes symbolic, suggesting a story rather than telling one outright. A weathered road, a quiet field, an approaching storm, or a solitary tree becomes more than a landscape element. It becomes a fragment of a larger narrative left intentionally unfinished.
"There is a subtext to each piece," Mooney says. "While you may actually paint a literal object, a lot has been left out, and this allows for the creation of the story. The viewer tends to fill in the missing gaps."
It is this partnership between artist and viewer that makes Mooney's work so engaging. Rather than dictating meaning, he creates space for personal interpretation. Every visitor brings their own memories, emotions, and experiences into the painting, discovering a different story within the same scene.
The emotional pull of his work comes not only from what is painted, but from how it is painted.

Mooney has long been recognized for his extraordinary command of light. Dramatic skies, glowing horizons, and striking contrasts between light and shadow create an atmosphere charged with anticipation. His compositions often feel suspended in a fleeting moment, as though something has just happened or is about to unfold.
"I believe very strongly that my work should be compelling," he says. "There should be some aspect of the work that really draws you in and holds your attention. Maybe it is the keying of light—the high-contrast sky that creates drama."
That cinematic quality has become one of the defining characteristics of his paintings.
"This is a very cinematic approach," Mooney explains. "Each painting becomes a little film, if you will, that slowly unfolds over time without a beginning, middle, or end."
Like the most memorable films, his paintings linger long after you've stepped away. They don't provide neat conclusions or easy answers. Instead, they leave room for contemplation, allowing each viewer to complete the story in their own way.
It is this balance of technical mastery and emotional openness that has made Craig Mooney one of today's most respected contemporary landscape painters. His work captures more than the appearance of a place. It captures the feeling of remembering one.
